THE PAST PERFECT TENSE

 

 

The Past Perfect tense is formed by using the past of the auxiliary verb to have and the Past Participle of the verb required.

USE : We use the PAST PERFECT to make it clear that an activity took place before the main events in a story.

 

The Past Perfect tense denotes a past  action finished before another past action began.

 

  • He told me that he had bought a small house at the seaside.
  • She told me his name after he had left.
  • After you had gone I went to sleep.
  • He said that he had lost his way in the woods.

            He had lost his watch before we reached the village.

  • The boat had sunk before the rescue party found it.
  • As soon as he had left the room I turned on the radio.
  • After we had had dinner we went to the cinema.
  • She had left before I arrived.
  • When I arrived Anna had just left..
  • She suddenly found that she had lost her camera.
  • He showed her the picture he had bought in Italy.

 

Past  perfect  tense

 

Sentences in the past perfect tense have the following structure:

Subject + had + past participle form of the verb

I had never seen him before.
We had anticipated this happening.
The sun had risen.
The train had steamed out before I reached the station.
He had left before I came.

Interrogative sentences in the past perfect tense have the following structure:

Had + subject + past participle form of the verb

Had I seen him before?
Had we anticipated this happening?
Had the train steamed out before they reached the station?
Had he left before I came?
